Climate Adaptation Competency Framework (CACF, 2021)

Competencies of climate communications addressed:

  • Applies effective oral, written, and digital communication strategies and principles using a range of communication styles, tools and media channels.
  • Works to develop authentic connections with diverse audiences, clarifying views and values, demonstrating interest in bridging differences, and enhancing individual and collective adaptive capacity and action.
  • Facilitates constructive and culturally appropriate dialogues with diverse audiences, using storytelling and other strategies to convey and motivate a response to the urgency of climate action

Course Outline / Syllabus

In this course, you'll learn how to communicate effectively about climate change and inspire action. Explore key concepts for effective communication, best practices, and guidance from leading climate communication experts and researchers.

Discover how to start and respond to conversations about climate adaptation in ways that mobilize the public and sustain social connection.

In this course, you will:

  • Learn communication principles including messaging, audience targeting, and impact
  • Examine the latest thinking in the climate communication agenda
  • Explore how to mobilize the public through engagement and artful communication content
  • Understand how communication shapes every aspect of climate research, action, and activism
  • Equip audiences with self-efficacy and participation methods in climate adaptation
  • Learn strategies to engage people, change attitudes, and sustain behaviors
  • Gain strategic communication skills applicable in various contexts Stay updated with climate communication researchers and practitioners

Assessment Methods

Assessment will be comprised of two components: (1) a Participation mark and (2) a Final Assignment mark.

(1) A Participation mark worth 40% of the final grade will be assessed and calculated based on participants’ contributions in the course activities, which include a Padlet post and contribution to discussion forums (asynchronous discussion).

(2) A Final Assignment mark (an analysis of a case study) worth 60% of the final grade will be assessed and calculated based on criteria outlined below:

Participants will develop and submit a written analysis that applies course concepts to a real-world case study of their choice.
